And, lets not forget how good it feels to win. Sure you may have really wanted the "garden weasel" but just knowing that you out bid and won the item can sometimes be more gratifying than actually receiving the product itself. There are a lot of people who enter online auctions for the sheer joy of beating other people in the bidding process.
