Treatment possibilities for the different types of hearing loss

Hearing loss is one of those disorders that can happen to just about anyone at any time. Hearing loss is commonly very gradual and slow to unfold, as a person loses ability to hear certain sounds and frequency. Some people may also experience irreversible hearing impairment that cannot be remedied at all.

Having yourself checked by a doctor should be the number one priority when there are obvious and not so obvious signs of hearing problems. Pinpointing the area of damage or of concern with regards to the hearing disorder is the initial step when undergoing a checkup. Diagnosing what the exact hearing problem is will determine the right hearing treatment for the patient.

Hearing loss is a general term that covers a lot of hearing disorders and not just one kind. The kind or type of hearing loss is based on which part of the hearing pathway is affected. Advances in medicinal science can treat some types of hearing loss but not all, for example hearing nerve damage.

A blockage or problem that arises from the transmission of sound from the outer ear to the inner ear along the middle ear is called conductive hearing loss. Any failures along the hearing pathway, including the ear canal, the outer and middle ear parts, the tiny bones, all fall under the conductive hearing disorder. Medication, surgery can usually take care of this type of hearing disorder, but if not, there are always hearing aids that can help manage the problem.

Now that you know conductive hearing loss, we take a look at a more complicated and challenging hearing disorder called sensorineural hearing loss. Any disfunctions within the inner ear, the cochlea, nerves, hair cells and even abnormalities within the brain with regards to processing audio are under sensorineural. The cochlea or the auditory portion of the inner ear is made up of thousands of hearing nerve endings or hair cells that respond to sounds and these are all very susceptible to damage.

Chances are you didn't know that there is a medical condition wherein hearing can be affected by disorders in the central nervous system and this is called central hearing loss. Having problems understanding speech, difficulties in isolating and filtering out sound are two examples of what a person will go through. Unfortunately, even with all the advances of science and technology today, there is little and close to nothing that can be done to cure this problem.

A condition called functional hearing loss is a person not being able to hear because of psychological reasons. This condition plays tricks with the person, as the person is fully capable of hearing, but his mind doesn't allow him to. A person who has this condition, is vulnerable to being diagnosed incorrectly as it is extremely hard for a doctor to accurately diagnose this.

If a person has both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss in one ear, then the person is said to have mixed hearing loss. It is still pretty easy to treat the conductive hearing part of the problem. But the problem with sensorineural loss is most likely permanent for now, until new advances in medicinal technology can find a cure for it.

Hearing loss is a big deal and anyone can get it at any time. Everyone should take heed of this warning, as once a person's hearing is gone, it may be gone forever. A person should see their physician once in a while to get examinations for the whole body just to see if everything is working ok.
